Operating costs West Papua, Indonesia, 1977: During an upsurge of separatist fighting, Freeport Minerals’ copper mine became the target of dissident action. As the Indonesian government dispatched military units to protect it, the corporation incurred expenses ‘totalling $17,024, related to the support of [government] military personnel engaged in security operations in the vicinity of its facilities’ (OPIC, Freeport 1979, p. 12).
